Meninas acreditam ser melhores do que os meninos a partir dos quatro

É a idade: meninas acreditam que são melhores do que os meninos na faixa dos quatros anos. Uma nova pesquisa realizada pela Universidade de Kent, no Reino Unido, a ideia de que elas são mais inteligentes, mais bem comportadas e se esforçam mais começa nesta época e persiste por todo o primário. Aos oito anos de idade, os meninos acabam concordando com isso.

A pesquisa, baseada em questionamentos detalhados de 238 crianças de duas escolas primárias de Kent, sublinha as dificuldades que os professores e educadores podem enfrentar na hora de melhorar o desempenho dos meninos. Em geral, eles ficam atrás das meninas em termos de rendimento na escola.

Estudos anteriores já demonstraram que as crenças sobre o que é esperado de uma criança pode funcionar quase como uma “profecia”. Já que meninas são consideradas mais propensas a fazer melhor, elas o fazem, reforçando ainda mais as expectativas.

“Entre sete e oito anos de idade, as crianças de ambos os sexos acreditam que os meninos são menos focados, capazes e bem sucedidos do que as meninas, achando que os adultos aprovam este estereótipo”, diz Bonny Hartley, que apresentou a pesquisa. De acordo com o pesquisador, alterações na forma como as escolas lidam com estes estereótipos poderiam quebrar o ciclo de baixa expectativa em relação aos meninos.

O trabalho “Children’s development of sterotypical gender-related expectations about academic engagement and consequences for performance” foi apresentado ontem na British Educational Research Association.
