Dietas ricas em metionina podem aumentar risco de Alzheimer

Uma dieta rica em metionina, aminoácido normalmente encontrado em carnes vermelhas, peixe, feijão, ovos, alho, lentinha, cebola, iogurte e sementes, pode aumentar o risco de Alzheimer. A conclusão foi obtida por pesquisadores da Universidade de Temple, nos EUA.

“Quando os níveis de metionina são altos, o organismo tenta se proteger transformando-a em um tipo particular de aminoácido chamado hemocisteína”, explicou Domenico Praticó, responsável pela pesquisa. “Os dados preliminares mostram que quando os níveis de hemocisteína aumentam no sangue há um risco bem maior de desenvolver a doença”.

Usando para a pesquisa ratos com sete meses, os estudiosos alimentaram um grupo durante oito meses com dieta regular, e outro grupo com alimentos com altas doses de metionina. Então os ratos foram submetidos a testes no 15º mês, o que equivaleria a um homem de 70 anos de idade.

Ratos com dietas normais tiveram níveis normais de hemocisteína, mas ratos que ingeriram altas doses de metionina tiveram um aumento dos níveis de hemocisteína no organismo. O grupo com altos níveis de hemocisteína tiveram também um aumento de até 40 % da placa amiloide – depósitos de proteínas que bloqueiam e matam neurônios no cérebro (por meio dos quais se mede o desenvolvimento do Alzheimer). Além disso, os pesquisadores examinaram a capacidade de aprender uma nova tarefa e o grupo que teve uma dieta rica em metionina apresentou déficits.

Mesmo assim, enfatizou Praticò, metionina é aminoácido essencial para o organismo e parar o consumo da substância não é uma maneira de prevenir o Alzheimer. Entretanto, pessoas com uma dieta baseada em carne vermelha pode ter mais chances de desenvolver altos níveis de hemocisteína.
